Semillon grapes originated in the French region Bordeaux.
In Turkey, these grapes are grown in Thrace, in the districts of Tekirdağ and
Şarköy. The vineyards are located in the mild climate near the shores of the Sea
of Marmara, 0 - 100 meters above sea level. The soil found in Şarköy is sandy
and gravelly and the goblet pruning system is used for the vines. The high
training system on wires utilized to train the vines in the vineyards near
Tekirdağ, where the soil is composed of clay and pebbles. This grape was first
planted when phlloxera first began to spread.
Wine produced from this thin-skinned and juicy grape has citrus fruits aromas in
cold climate while tropical fruits can be detected in a hot climate with medium
to high acidity. Semillon grapes are very suitable for oak maturation and bottle
ageing.
Good examples in world wine making are produced in France (Bordeaux (Sauternes,
Graves, Pessac Leognan), Provence) and Australia.
