Kalecik Karası

Kalecik Karası is a Central Anatolian high-quality wine grape which is grown in Kalecik district in Kızılırmak basin.

Kalecik Karası is round, bluish-black, thin-skinned wine-grape. The wines produced from this grape is medium intensity red in colour; reveals pronounced red fruits aromas and it has low to medium tannin with high acidity. The most pronounced aromas of the grape are strawberry, raspberry and cherry. They are suitable for aging in oak barrels. The maturation and aging process in the oak barrels imparts a complex aroma of spice, dried fruit and coffee. This grape is suitable for making both young and aged wines.

This variety had been overlooked, almost forgotten, for many years and was cultivated in small quantities in Ankara’s Kalecik district where the micro-climate of the Kızılırmak was suitable and around the Kavaklıdere Winery Facilities in Akyurt. Research and development of the Kalecik Karası by an expert team from the Ankara Faculty of Agriculture and Kavaklıdere Winery brought it back to the place it deserved in wine production.

Kalecik Karası grapes are grown in Kavaklıdere’s Kalecik, Nevşehir and Kırşehir vineyards. Ancyra Kalecik Karası and Prestige Kalecik Karası wines are made solely from the Kalecik Karası variety. Vin-art Kalecik Karası Syrah is a blend wine produced from Kalecik Karası and Syrah grapes.
